The Greater Sundarbans with its natural resources, communities, fascinating traditions, and culture has a lot to offer to tourists and other stakeholders. There is also a great potential to upgrade the existing systems to perform better. Bangladesh Ecotourism and Conservation Alliance (BECA) is working together with destination stakeholders to strengthen the base of tourism in the Sundarbans by developing the pathways to sustain it. To do that, the Alliance is curating the resources, crafting plans, and fostering various community ventures. Its initiatives aim to benefit local communities by increasing their capacity, improving their infrastructure, promoting local products and handicrafts, and connecting them to different investment opportunities. BECA is also streamlining and elevating tourism management in the Sundarbans by developing a destination management organization so that the tourists get the best experience while they visit the site.
The Alliance will work to brand the Sundarbans to attract local and international investors to this region for the holistic development of local communities. Apart from community wellbeing, biodiversity conservation is another core element of this project, and BECA will promote and establish positive behaviors within the communities and among tourists through their initiatives. To find solutions to the ongoing problems of the Sundarbans and reinforce the science-based conservation and policy programs BECA will unite enthusiastic minds and develop a researchers’ network. The project activities will give local communities sustainable income sources and make sure they have access to other basic needs such as water and health that helps them lead a happy and quality life.
